One of my favorite things to do is EAT. I love to cook and I especially love to try new restaurants (I even subscribe to an awesome magazine, My Table, that is all about Houston restaurants). Pre kids, going out to eat was our favorite date night activity, and now, we just take them right along! Don’t get me wrong, dining without the littles can be oh so much more fun, but that is not always a possibility.
Brad and I have always believed that kids would not change the way we lived our lives. Instead, they would become an awesome extension of them! So…. we introduced them to our loves in life as soon as possible. This of course means our love of FOOD (and maybe Aggie football).
When Fenn was a tiny babe we literally took him anywhere and everywhere we went (those first months were the best for going out to eat, he just slept in his infant carrier all over town). Now that we are raising a three-nager (more on that will surely be shared later) and another precious babe, going out to dinner is a bit more challenging. Rest assured, that doesn’t stop us. One of my all-time favorite Fenner moments was the first time he chimed in and “politely” let a waiter know what he wanted to order. We were so proud.
While we still like to venture out and take the kids to new restaurants now and then, we do have tried and true favorites. Here are some of the adult AND KID friendly places we like to take our littles these days.
All of their locations are fabulous. We are lucky enough to live within walking distance of one. When the weather isn’t too unbearably hot we love to take Duchess with us and sit outside. The food is great (big salads and burgers are our go to orders), and Fenn loves to color pictures of Barnaby (the owner’s dog) and play with their wooden robots. They recently changed the kids chicken strips, and they may now be one of my favorite things on the menu.
This place is always a hit, and it now has many locations as well. We love the crispy chicken sandwich and the egg salad sandwich. Their sides are fresh, seasonal, and always delicious. Bonus… the scratch made cookies and other desserts! The Upper Kirby location has a great patio and the mintade (mint lemonade) is my favorite.
Owned by the Carrabba Family, how could it go wrong?! BBQ, burgers, tacos, chicken tenders, chicken fried steak… anything you can dip their jalapeño gravy in, and free soft serve ice cream! What else do I need to say? This is a favorite lazy Sunday place of ours. Try it!
We love cajun food and anything that makes us feel like we are in New Orleans. The heights location is the perfect casual atmosphere for kids and adults. They have amazing crawfish, po’boys, red beans and rice, boudin balls and so much more. Just a warning, it can get crazy packed on weekends during crawfish season.
I know you are probably questioning this week one. A brewery? Yes, the restaurant at Karbach is surprisingly very kid friendly (they even have a baby changing station in the restroom). We have been a few times with rather large groups, including many kids, and everyone has enjoyed it. They do not have a kids menu, but were very willing to modify menu items to make them more “kid friendly”. Brad and Fenn shared the BBQ pulled pork pizza last time and it was yummy! When the weather gets cooler, the Biergarten will be fun for live music and outdoor games.
This is may be more of a bar than restaurant, but the food is always wonderful! I dream about the CFS (chicken fried steak) bites regularly. It has a kid and dog friendly patio along with a park right beside it. They even have live music on weekend nights. During the cooler months we love to go and sit outside by the fire pits.
This is definitely a tried and true favorite. It, and all of the creek group restaurants for that matter, are great for kids and those friends without kids as well. You will find consistently good food and a fun atmosphere.
This gem is located in Buffalo Bayou Park, super close to our house. It may look fancy with its beautiful chandelier covered dining room, but you will find park goers in athletic gear as well as well dressed patrons. We like stroll up on the back patio with Duch and the kids and enjoy the food and the view!
I could go on and on about our favorite Houston restaurants, but I’ll save the rest for another time. I hope this list gets you excited to try some of these places yourself. What are your favorite kid friendly restaurants in Houston?
